13 Events Unveiled as Part of WPT National and Regional Series

Culminating its largest and most successful season ever with the upcoming WPT World Championship at Bellagio, World Poker Tour is proud to announce an expanded international schedule for WPT Season XI in 2012. Through its new schedule, WPT is continuing its mission to provide players with access to world-class poker in new venues and territories across the globe.

“World Poker Tour is committed to extending its global reach,” said Steve Heller, WPT CEO. “Not only will Season XI feature new stops in the US and abroad, but World Poker Tour is also widely expanding our Regional and National Series to deliver the WPT experience to as many players and fans as possible.”

Players seeking to have their names etched onto the coveted WPT Champions Cup can begin their 2012 campaign for poker immortality and begin earning points toward WPT Player of the Year honors at Season XI’s first event, WPT Merit Cyprus Classic (August 4 – 9) before travelling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the inaugural WPT Parx Open Poker Classic (August 10 – 15), featuring a televised final table and a re-entry option on Day 1B.

Of course, WPT Season XI will also return to charter casinos for celebrated historic tournaments. The prestigious Legends of Poker brings WPT back to Los Angeles’ Bicycle Casino for the 11th consecutive year (August 24 – 29) before the tour heads to the glamorous Grand Prix de Paris in the famed Aviation Club de France for the season’s first televised international event (September 10 – 15). This year, the Grand Prix de Paris offers players a re-entry option, as will every 2012 WPT Season XI Main Event outside of the Five Diamond World Poker Classic (December 17 – 22).

Building on its reputation as a true, global tour, WPT will provide players on both sides of the Atlantic the opportunity to play in events starting on the same day. In Europe, players can attend WPT Malta at the luxurious Casino at Portomaso (September 16 – 20), while players who prefer the US can head to Atlantic City to compete in the Borgata Poker Open (September 16 – 21), which, in Season X, attracted the largest field in WPT history.

November features the return to Florida and one of Season X’s most popular venues, bestbet Jacksonville. This beautiful, 70-table poker facility plays host to the Jacksonville bestbet Fall Series (November 9 – 13). New venues host the tour’s next two stops, with the inaugural WPT Copenhagen in Denmark (November 12 – 17) and WPT Mazagan at the Mazagan Casino in Morocco (November 26 – December 1).

The tour makes one last international stop in 2012 at the historic Corinthia Hotel for WPT Prague in the Czech Republic (December 3 – 9) before the year’s final televised tournament, the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the stunning Bellagio in Las Vegas.

In addition to this incredible slate of 2012 WPT Season XI Main Events, World Poker Tour is proud to offer players around the globe the chance to play in an expanded roster of WPT Regional and National Series tournaments. With 13 upcoming events through the end of 2012, including stops across the US (Florida, Wisconsin, Nevada, Colorado) and Europe (France, Italy, Spain), the WPT Regional and National Series continue to provide players with the opportunity to compete in world-class poker tournaments with even more accessible buy-ins.

With the WPT World Championship just days away, players should remember there’s more to do at the stunning Bellagio besides just play poker, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Players looking for the full WPT experience during their Las Vegas visit should remember to schedule some time to hang with the Royal Flush Girls at Bellagio’s sleek and sexy new club, Lily, on Saturday night. Join the girls for drinks starting at 10 p.m. and listen as some of Vegas’ hottest women DJs do their thing as part of Lily’s popular Femme Fatale night.

WPT Champions Club members are invited to join the Royal Flush Girls and other World Poker Tour cast members – including Mike Sexton, Vince Van Patten, and Tony Dunst – on Sunday when WPT holds its special Champions Club Dinner at Yellowtail, starting at 9 p.m. Featuring innovative twists on traditional and modern Japanese cuisine, Yellowtail is the perfect place to relax while enjoying incredible food and great views of the Bellagio’s iconic fountains along the Strip.

The party continues after dinner when the action moves to the exclusive Bank Nightclub from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Open to all WPT World Championship players, this is a free event that, honestly, shouldn’t be missed. (Scroll down for pictures from last year’s event to see for yourself.)

Dance, drink or just hang out and plan how you’ll take advantage of your hung-over opponents at the tables on Monday, the choice is up to you.

Televised $100K WPT Super High Roller to Run May 23 – 25; Tight Race Culminates with WPT Player of the Year

This Saturday, World Poker Tour returns to Bellagio in Las Vegas for the final event of Season X, the WPT World Championship. The prestigious finale boasts a $25,000 + $500 buy-in and runs May 19 – 26. As the culminating WPT Main Event to the historic 10th season of the World Poker Tour, the high-stakes action also will determine the winner in the close race for WPT Player of the Year.

The WPT World Championship features registration until the start of Level 12 on Monday, May 21. While players can enter this premier event well into Day 3, many poker pros will be in attendance from the start to take advantage of the acclaimed deep-stack tournament structure. This upcoming week of world-class poker at Bellagio will additionally include the televised WPT Super High Roller, which for the first time in WPT history will be broadcast as three stand-alone episodes on Fox Sports Net (FSN). This re-entry $100,000 buy-in World Poker Tour special event runs May 23 – 25 (registration is open until the start of Level 7 on Day 1) and offers players unprecedented national exposure.

“The prestige of this event is unmatched as whoever is left standing will have defeated what many consider to be the toughest field in all of poker,” said Steve Heller, WPT CEO. “Earning the right to be called WPT World Champion is poker’s crowning achievement and a career-defining moment.”

During the WPT World Championship, players will be able to enjoy a variety of entertaining off-the-felt activities at Bellagio as part of the World Poker Tour experience. On Day 1, WPT will be hosting drinks with the beautiful Royal Flush Girls starting at 10:00 p.m. at Lily Lounge. The following day, World Poker Tour will be presenting a special Sunday night dinner at Yellowtail for WPT Champions Club members. Later that night, a VIP Players Party will be held at The Bank Nightclub from 11:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m., with free entry and drinks for WPT Main Event participants.

The season finale also marks the televised return of Kimberly Lansing as WPT Anchor following a five-month maternity leave. The final tables of both the WPT Super High Roller (May 25) and the WPT World Championship (May 26) will be streamed online at WPT.com. Starting at 4:30 p.m. PT, WPT Live Streaming features rich graphics, hole-cards and expert analysis from Raw Deal Analyst Tony Dunst and renowned guest commentators.

In the tight race for WPT Player of the Year, Will “The Thrill” Failla takes a slight lead into the WPT World Championship. With significant POY points still to be awarded, this prestigious honor is truly up for grabs as more than 70 players are within one deep run of the title.

During 2011, Scott Seiver defeated a strong international field to win the Season IX WPT World Championship and the $1,618,344 first-place prize. Once again, poker’s top professionals are expected to compete in this year’s exceptional event. Among the confirmed players for the WPT World Championship are 20 Season X Champions, past WPT Players of the Year Daniel Negreanu and Jonathan Little, defending WPT World Champion Scott Seiver, the leaders in the Season X race for WPT Player of the Year and many famous professionals such as Tony G, Jason Mercier, Erik Seidel and Ben Lamb.

Just over one year ago, 29 of the world’s best poker players put up $100,000 each to take place in an historic event – the first-ever Super High Roller tournament held in the United States. The tournament was an incredible success but, this year’s Super High Roller promises to be an even better experience for both fans and players.

The 2012 Super High Roller begins on May 23 and late registration will be available all the way through the end of Level 7. Players who bust early will also have a shot at redemption in this year’s tournament, as re-entries will also be allowed – and encouraged. Finally, the entire tournament will be broadcast over the course of three separate episodes as part of the Season X telecast. Fans who can’t wait for the edited show can even live-stream the final table on www.WPT.com beginning at 4:30 PM PST on May 25.

As the home of the first-ever WPT tournament and some of the biggest poker games in the world, it only made sense for World Poker Tour to hold it’s biggest buy-in event at the famed Bellagio in Las Vegas. Fittingly, it also made sense that one of the classiest – and most successful tournament players ever – Erik Seidel, was crowned champion of the inaugural Super High Roller event, walking away with a staggering $1,092,000 in winnings.

Following close on the heels of the Season IX WPT World Championship, just nine hearty souls, including Dan “Jungleman” Cates, Phil Galfond, Justin “Boosted J” Smith, Vivek Rajkumar, and Erik Seidel took to the felt when the tournament started.

The field slowly grew throughout the day, attracting a total of 29 players and generating a prize pool worth more than $2.8 million. In the end though, only five players would make it to the money on Day 2.

Phil Galfond was the first player eliminated in the tournament when Daniel Negreanu rivered a back-door flush to bust him in Level 4. When the day’s play ended four levels later, only 17 players remained and Justin Bonomo held the chip lead, pushing his 400,000 starting stack to more than 1.8 million at day’s end.

The fireworks started early on Day 2 with Eugene Katchalov and Yevgeniy Timoshenko quickly heading to the rail. The bust-outs continued and, when Dan Shak went broke in 11th place, Bonomo still held a commanding chip lead when the 10-handed final table began.

While Cary Katz was the tournament’s eventual bubble boy, it was Bonomo who fell the furthest on the day, finishing the event in fifth place. Following Daniel Negreanu’s third-place exit, only Erik Seidel and Erick Lindgren were left to battle for the title.

With 6,295,000 chips at the start of heads-up play, Lindgren held a small lead over Seidel who started with a stack of 5,305,000. Seidel flipped the script just 19 hands later, taking over the chip lead which he’d hold through the end of the day’s play.

When Day 3 began, it took Lindgren just three hands to double up and establish a 3-1chip lead when he rivered a full house with Kh 6h to beat Seidel’s flopped King-high flush. Seidel quickly battled back, and reclaimed the chip lead for the final time just five hands later. From that point on, Seidel slowly ground Lindgren down, finally sealing the victory when his flopped pair of Aces held up against Lindgren’s gut-shot and flush draws.

Final payouts for the Season IX Super High Roller tournament were as follows:

Erik Seidel – $1,092,780
Erick Lindgren – $700,500
Daniel Negreanu – $448,320
Vivek Rajkumar – $336,240
Justin Bonomo – $224,160

On Sunday night at 8pm and 11pm local time on FSN, viewers will tune in to watch some of the best poker players in the world pony up $10,000 for the chance to enter poker history as a WPT Champion at WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. The episode will feature extended playdown coverage, starting from Day 1 and going all the way down to the final six who will make up the WPT televised final table. At that final table will be a player who is no stranger to the bright lights of the WPT TV set, Antonio Esfandiari, who will be gunning for his third WPT title and back-to-back wins at the Bellagio on his birthday.

Here’s a quick look at the man they call “The Magician.”

The Iranian-born and California-bred Antonio Esfandiari earned his nickname “The Magician” thanks to his sleight of hand skills. Esfandiari first became intrigued by magic after a bartender at the restaurant he waited tables in showed him a few tricks. The teen-aged Esfandiari quickly mastered a number of tricks and started performing at that very restaurant.

Esfandiari’s love for cards extended beyond card tricks though. He caught the poker bug after a trip to a Bay Area cardroom when he was 19 years-old. After building up a bankroll in games around his hometown of San Jose, Esfandiari relocated to Vegas where he met what many consider his best friend, Phil Laak. With Laak’s help, Esfandiari sharpened his poker and his bankroll management skills.

A short while later, Esfandiari started to make what would be a lasting mark on the World Poker Tour. He final tabled the tour’s Gold Rush Event in the tour’s debut season, ultimately finishing third. Esfandiari racked up two more final tables in Season II, winning the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce for $1,399,135 and followed that up days later with a sixth place finish in the WPT Celebrity Invitational. Esfandiari’s red hot 2004 continued with a WSOP bracelet victory in a $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event and, over the years, Esfandiari has amassed more than $4.5 million in career tournament earnings.

Between 2004 and 2010 though, Esfandiari had a tough time finding a way back to a WPT final table. Seven years after Esfandiari’s first WPT victory, Esfandiari got one hell of a birthday present at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio during Season IX. After holding the chip lead for the vast majority of the tournament, Esfandiari rallied at an all-star final table to beat good friend Andrew Robl heads-up for the title. His rail hoisted the birthday boy in the air following his win, celebrating him growing another year older and $870,124 richer, not to mention his inclusion in the elite group of players with two WPT titles to their credit.

(Bio info from WorldPokerTour.com)

On Sunday night, one of the biggest events on the World Poker Tour calendar kicks off on FSN at 8pm and 11pm local time on FSN with the airing of WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic: Part 1. As a long-standing part of the World Poker Tour in the worldwide mecca of poker – Bellagio, Las Vegas – this event is hugely popular with poker pros and a large number of them turn out every year to battle to have their name engraved on the WPT Champions Cup.

As a testament to the popularity of this event, and how tough the field can be, when Day 1 kicked off the field contained an astounding 28 WPT Champions, not to mention the well-known pros looking to take down their first WPT event. The chipleader at the end of Day 1 was one such pro as Vanessa Selbst sat atop the list of 283 players who survived to see another day, while looking for her first WPT title.

As registration stayed open well into Day 2, many more recognizable faces showed up at the tables to begin what they hoped would be a deep run at this tournament, including the event’s namesake, Doyle Brunson. When registration finally closed, 413 players had ponied up the buy-in for a chance at poker history but only 149 players survived to move onto Day 3.

Once again demonstrating the strength of this field, Day 3 saw Selbst, Brunson, Carlos Mortensen, Antonio Esfandiari, Andrew Robl and Darren Elias all at a single table, the kind of thing you only see at a WPT event. The money bubble burst late in the day with 100 players left and the day ended with just 49 remaining in the field.

Day 4 follows WPT Raw Deal’s Tony Dunst along with David Williams and Allen Cunningham (who crossed the $1 million mark in career WPT earnings with his cash) as they hit the rail, falling just short of their quest for the final table. The day ends with only 13 players left, including Esfandiari as he gets closer and closer to back-to-back final tables and WPT titles. He is joined by Season X One to Watch William Reynolds and chipleader Soi Nguyen.

Just seven players stood between the starting 13 and the six who would comprise the WPT televised final table and those seven found themselves out of luck soon enough, leaving the following as the players sitting at that final table:

Soi Nguyen – 4,995,000
James Dempsey – 3,860,000
Andrew Lichtenberger – 3,605,000
Vanessa Selbst – 2,250,000
Antonio Esfandiari – 1,255,000
Vitor Coelho – 560,000

The storylines abound at this final table, including Esfandiari’s incredible run at another WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic title, so make sure to tune in to, or set your DVRs for, FSN on Sunday night at 8pm and 11pm local time to watch history in the making as this tough table of pros and amateurs battle it out for a spot on the WPT Champions Cup.

In less than 10 days, the WPT World Championship kicks-off at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. As one of poker’s most prestigious events, the WPT Season X finale is set to attract the game’s top professionals and create a massive prize pool. Before this event gets underway, the WPT Blog has decided to take a look back at last year’s dramatic tournament.

Bellagio is synonymous with high-stakes poker, playing host to the first-ever WPT tournament in the Five Diamond World Poker Classic (May 27 – June 1, 2002) and home to Bobby’s Room. Year after year, the poker’s foremost players turnout in force for the $25,000 WPT World Championship and Season IX was no exception. A total of 220 elite professionals registered for the seven-day event, including those in contention for WPT Season IX Player of the Year.

The acclaimed blind structure gives skilled players ample time to chip up, and most of the 188 Day 1 participants survived into Day 2. Joining the field the following day were 32 additional professionals, including Phil Hellmuth, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier , Tony G, and defending Champion David Williams. The pace picked up and only 116 of the starting field made it through to Day 3. Late entry proved to be a strong tactic for David Williams, who made a serious run at repeating as Champion before bowing out in a commendable 14th place ($53,095).

Day 3 saw the elimination of many WPT Champions, however Season IX WPT Amneville Champion Sam El Sayed made it through as chip leader. At the start of Day 4, El Sayed looked to be the biggest threat to overtake then-front runner Andy Frankenberger for WPT Season IX Player of the Year. When play continued, El Sayed continued to impress and survived again near the top of the chip counts. Young pro Galen Hall took the chip lead into Day 5 but was followed closely by Roger Teska and Scott Seiver.

The final play-down day produced a dramatic end to the race for WPT Season IX Player of the Year. With just ten players remaining, Shannon Shorr and Sam El Sayed both held a chance at passing Andy Frankenberger with a fifth-place or higher finish in the event. While Shorr would go on to bust in 9th place, El Sayed looked poised to become the WPT Season IX POY as he held a sizeable chip lead with only eight players remaining. However the tides quickly turned against his favor and after losing a huge pot to Scott Seiver, El Sayed continued to hemorrhage chips. Incredibly, El Sayed went from strong chip leader with eight remaining to the eight place finisher in a very short span, officially sending the WPT Player of the Year award to Andy Frankenberger.

After a day of rest, the final six players took to the felt to determine who would earn the right to be called WPT World Champion. Scott Seiver began the final table virtually tied for the chip lead with Galen Hall, and pulled out to the early chip lead. Hall closed that gap by eliminating Justin Young in sixth place when Young’s AJ failed to improve against Hall’s AK, but Seiver fired right back. The very next hand after Young’s elimination, Tony Gargano and Scott Seiver got it all-in preflop with Gargano holding KJ to Seiver’s AK. Once again, Big Slick prevailed, and the field was quickly cut to four.

That pot put Seiver near the 10-million chip mark and gave him a more than comfortable lead, so when Hall eliminated Roger Teska in fourth place a couple of orbits later, he still had only around half the stack Seiver did. While Hall’s stack was much smaller than Seiver’s, it was short stack Farzad Bonyadi who was in the worst shape. The Iranian poker pro was not only the only non-American at the table, he was the lone representative of the old guard amongst a line-up of players all under the age of 30. Bonyadi more than held his own though, doubling up early to stay alive. and then doubling up through Hall not once, but twice during three-handed play.

Seiver would go on to eliminate Hall to set the heads-up showdown with Bonyadi. Seiver held a 3-1 chip advantage over Bonyadi, but the patient pro would not make it easy on Seiver. He doubled up when his top pair and straight draw held up against Seiver’s gutshot and flush draw combination to pick up some chips, but Seiver whittled Bonyadi back down to a stack that left him little room to maneuver. On the final hand of play, Seiver min-raised the button and Bonyadi called. The two players checked it down on the flop and turn as the board ran out 1062QK. The action blew up on the river as Seiver bet, Bonyadi raised, and Seiver moved all-in. Bonyadi thought for three minutes before calling with Q10 for two pair, but Seiver had J9 for the straight to take the pot and the victory.

Poker has always had its class clowns (Gavin Smith and Mike Matusow come to mind), as does some of the long list of actual comedians with a love of the game. The old guard has plenty of them, but in the new school of serious online poker players, there is one jokester who stands out above the rest: Scott Seiver. His poker prowess had long been obvious, but on the WPT especially, sometimes his happy personality overshadowed his results. That was the case no longer though, as Seiver masterfully controlled a tough final table to pick up the World Poker Tour’s most prestigious title and bring Season IX to a spectacular close.

Final table results from the Season IX WPT World Championship:

1st: Scott Seiver - $1,618,344
2nd: Farzad Bonyadi - $1,061,900
3rd: Galen Hall - $589,355
4th: Roger Teska - $371,665
5th: Tony Gargano - $278,749
6th: Justin Young - $225,654

When WPT World Poker Finals: Part 3 aired last night at 8pm and 11pm local time on FSN, we were three-handed with amateur Bob Carbone hanging on behind pros Christian Harder and Daniel Santoro. Unfortunately, he would not last very long, doubling up through Harder before running into Santoro’s pocket aces and exiting in third place for $166,271.

When Santoro absorbed Carbone’s chip stack in the aforementioned hand, it gave him an almost 4-1 chip lead over Harder going into heads-up play, a seemingly insurmountable lead. However, what came next was one of the biggest rollercoaster rides a WPT final table has ever seen.

Santoro started out the match playing classic big stack poker, getting involved in every hand and pushing Harder into tough spots and forcing him to make tough decisions to fold his hand. As Harder’s stack dwindled, he started pushing back, doubling up three times in relative succession to go from small stack to chip lead in the span of just a few minutes. Just four hands later, though, the lead went back to Santoro and the eventual champion doubled back though Harder. As the two reached the 200-hand mark, the tournament ended the only way it could have after all of the back and forth, with a coin flip race between Santoro’s AK to Harder’s pocket 10s with Harder’s stack just covered by Santoro’s. Even the final hand had its own drama as Harder led until the final card, which produced a king to give Santoro the victory, $449,910, a seat to the $25,000 WPT World Championships and his name on the WPT Champions Cup.

Here are the full final table results:

1st: Daniel Santoro – $449,910
2nd: Christian Harder – $248,962
3rd: Bob Carbone – $166,271
4th: Steven Brackesy – $129,816
5th: Andy Frankenberger – $99,585
6th: Eli Berg – $83,580

Make sure to tune in next week as World Poker Tour returns to las Vegas for WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio as we look to crown another WPT Champion.
